Important Facts About Cardiac Arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest takes the lives of over 350, 000 people in United States each year, and is the number killer of Americans today.

Every minute that passes after the initial onset of cardiac arrest, reduces a victim’s survival rate by 7 to 10%.

The average response time to the scene from EMS personal is 6 to 8 minutes within the city limits without traffic!

Using a defibrillator on a victim within the first 2 minutes from the onset of SCA, can increase their chance of survival by 85%.  

CPR only buys time until a defibrillator arrives on scene, it does not restart the heart.

The average American will witness at least one cardiac arrest in their lives

Defibrillators in Public Schools

In 2004, over 7000 student’s in the US loss their lives due to SCA.

Ninety percent of the arrest occurred during an athletic events

Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy and Commotio Cortis has been the leading cause of death in high school and Junior high students.

Most public schools do not have a full time nurse on the premises during the time that children are present.  Most teachers are not certified in CPR!


Myths About Defibrillators

Defibrillators are expensive.
Not true, the average price for an AED is about $2000, isn’t saving a life worth $2000?

Liability for using defibrillators is high risk for lawsuits?
Not true!  Now, the risk for NOT having a defibrillator in a public building is getting more difficult to justify in court.  Besides, the Good Samaritan act protects those who are initiating first aid in good faith.

Are Defibrillators are complicated to use?
AED’s are very simple to operate, the voice prompts talk you through the operation, and will not shock a victim that is not in cardiac arrest.  AED’s can make the difference between life and death.
